About Marlene
Hi there! My name is Marlene. I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I've had the pleasure of working in mental health for over 6 years. I specialize in working with teens and young adults struggling with depression, anxiety, and life transitions. I'm also trained in providing therapy through a Christian-based lens and through a culturally-sensitive lens. Together, we’ll explore and implement strategies that address your immediate concerns, and equip you with valuable tools to manage your symptoms and navigate life's uncertainties.
In my practice, I use a client-centered approach to create a space that feels safe and judgment-free. I also use evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address symptoms of anxiety and depression and Psychodynamic Therapy to explore deeper-rooted patterns, such as why we keep doing the same things over and over again that are not good for us.
Every session is tailored to your unique needs; it’s important for me to go beyond just providing evidenced-based care. I strive to make each session feel productive and to meet you where you are that week. Whether it means working on coping skills or talking about the movie you watched over the weekend, my goal for each session is that our time together will impact your overall well-being positively.

Educational Information
I received my AA from Orange Coast College. I'm a proud community college transferee! I then received my BA in Psychology from California State University, Dominguez Hills. During my undergraduate studies, I participated in multiple research labs where I investigated topics that looked at the influence that culture and bilingualism have on neuropsychological testing and health-seeking behaviors. I also investigated the role that gratitude plays in adolescent development, and how gratefulness can be cultivated in our thinking.
I received my Master of Science in Clinical Psychology from California State University, Fullerton where I completed a Master's thesis that examined how cultural frame switching impacts the way bicultural bilinguals respond to self-report questionnaires.
Experience
During my master's program, I interned at a mental health community clinic. During my time at Straight Talk Counseling, I got the opportunity to work with clients that were both ethnically and diagnostically diverse. Following graduation, I worked as a Case Manager at U.S.VETS, Long Beach. In this position, I worked with male veterans experiencing homelessness and substance abuse issues, and with civilian women that were impacted by homelessness, domestic violence, and substance abuse issues.
